Intro to Kayak Class

A guided learning experience designed for first-time paddlers looking to build confidence on the water while exploring the calm South Branch of the Chicago River.

Everyone starts somewhere

This program was created for people who want more than just a casual paddle.

Intro to Kayak Class is a structured beginner experience designed to teach the fundamentals of kayaking in a welcoming, supportive, and real on-water environment.

Starting at Ping Tom Park, participants begin with a hands-on introduction focused on kayaking fundamentals, including paddling technique, safety, boat control, and basic river navigation before transitioning into a guided paddle along the South Branch of the Chicago River.

Unlike a standard tour, this experience is built around learning through practice giving participants the opportunity to apply techniques in real time while gaining confidence on the water.

The goal is not speed or intensity. It’s comfort, progression, and connection through the learning experience itself.

"Had a great time on the river! Staff were super friendly and informative. The equipment was great and the views from the park and river can't be beat. We're excited to come back and do a tour with them!"

Before launching, participants take part in a guided learning session covering:

Once the group enters the South Branch, the experience transitions into a guided river paddle where participants actively apply the techniques they’ve learned in a calm and supportive environment.
