Frequently asked questions

What makes this kayaking experience unique?

We’re the only kayak rental in the South Branch of Chicago. Our mission is more than just rentals: we bring the outdoors to urban people. We're a community-driven collective of outdoor lovers creating accessible, cultural, and adventurous experiences right from the water.

Can I bring my child?

Children ages 6 and older are welcome to participate in our kayak rental experience. A parent or legal guardian must accompany minors and is required to sign a waiver before the activity. Please note that parents and guardians are fully responsible for the safety and supervision of the children in their care.

Do I need kayaking experience to rent a kayak?

All experience levels are welcome. We provide basic instructions before you head out. Keep in mind that the Chicago River is quite busy with boats, so you’ll encounter some waves.

How do I book a kayak?

Click on “Book Now” on our website to reserve your kayak. We recommend booking ahead, especially on weekends or holidays, to secure your spot.

How much is the rental?

Our rental rates:

-$30 per hour for a single kayak

- $40 per hour for a tandem kayak (2 people)

We keep it affordable to make paddling accessible to everyone in our community.

What should I bring?

Wear comfortable clothes that can get wet, and bring sunscreen, water, and a hat. We provide everything else — your kayak, paddle, and a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) for each paddler.

What if it rains?

We still paddle in light rain — it can be part of the adventure! If the weather is unsafe (like strong winds or storms), we’ll work with you to reschedule or offer a refund.

What’s the difference between a PFD and a life jacket?

A PFD is a type of life-saving device that allows greater freedom of movement, ideal for paddling. Traditional life jackets are bulkier and used mainly for emergencies. Our paddling-specific PFDs keep you safe without restricting your range of motion.

How are the kayaks I will use?

We use sit-on-top kayaks, which are wider and more stable than traditional models. That makes them perfect for beginners, casual paddlers, and anyone navigating the busy waters of the Chicago River, where boat traffic and waves are common.

This added stability means you can paddle confidently and enjoy the ride while staying safe and steady.
